Brush Up on Your History at One of These Local Museums

Tuscaloosa Museums

Forget about sticking your nose in a book to brush up on local history. You can do it the fun way by visiting an area museum. Tuscaloosa is home to some of the best museums in the country, and you’ll want to check them all out.

These three museums are the perfect starting point for your trek through history.

Alabama Museum of Natural History

The Alabama Museum of Natural History is easily one of the top museums in the entire state, and it’s conveniently located on the University of Alabama’s campus. This museum dives into Alabama’s ancient past, and you’ll be blown away by the exhibits and specimen collections. Don’t miss out on the Ancient Sea Monsters in Alabama exhibit. There might not be a Loch Ness Monster in the exhibit, but it does have some cool prehistoric reptiles.

The Paul W. Bryant Museum

Learn more about the man underneath the houndstooth fedora by visiting the Paul W. Bryant Museum. This unique museum is also located on the University of Alabama’s campus and is a must-see for any sports fan. You don’t even have to like Alabama to get a kick out of it. Well, if you’re an Auburn fan, you might want to turn away, but otherwise, this museum is a real treat. It’s not just about Bear Bryant either. You’ll learn all about Alabama football. You can even see trophies and other football artifacts up close.

Gorgas House Museum

The Gorgas House Museum is a unique structure. It’s the oldest building on campus at the University of Alabama and one of four that can claim it survived the Civil War. As you probably know, Union troops lit the campus on fire in 1865, and most of it burned to the ground. Not this building though.

It’s known for more than its sound structure though. It has one of the best collections of nineteenth-century artifacts you’ll ever see. You can also look through the furnishings and memorabilia the Gorgas family left behind.

This is just a small sampling of what you can see if you visit museums in Tuscaloosa. You can even go beyond Tuscaloosa and take in more of Alabama’s exciting history.
