The 411 on Moths

Moths are closely related to butterflies and are in the insect order known as Lepidoptera. There are nearly 11,000 species of moths in the United States and 160,000 species worldwide.

While moths share many characteristics with butterflies, they can be distinguished from their close relatives by the appearance of their antennae. Moth antennae generally appear threadlike or feathery, while butterfly antennae appear to be club tipped.

3 Fun Facts About Moths

According to nature.org, moths have some characteristics that you may find quite surprising:

  • No Moth Mouth: Some moths don’t have mouths and therefore can’t eat. These types of moths typically only have a lifespan of about a week.
  • Who Are You: Many moths have evolved over time to be able to imitate/impersonate other animals. This was developed as a defense mechanism against would be predators.
  • Beer is Good: If you’re looking to get a moth party started near you – try some beer. These creatures love the sugar in beer and are attracted to it.
