Fall has finally arrived, and in the south, that means two things. College football is here, and the weather is so nice that you want to get out and explore. After you finish watching the big game, head out to one of these local nature parks and take a hike this fall. These parks have the perfect trails for some fall fun.
Lake Lurleen State Park
Ask people around Tuscaloosa where they like to hike in the fall, and most will say “Lake Lurleen.” Lake Lurleen State Park is a local favorite, and it’s easy to see why. The 1,625-acre park has something for just about everyone, including hiking enthusiasts. With more than 23 miles of multi-use trails, you can stretch your legs while enjoying gorgeous views. Bring your mountain bike along if you want to pedal along the trails or let your feet do all the work. Bring your fishing pole along too. After all, you’re going to be at the lake, so you might as well catch some crappie, catfish, or largemouth bass while you’re there.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park
Learn a little history and get your hiking in at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. You can visit craft shops in restored pioneer cabins or watch blacksmiths demonstrate their crafts. The nature trails are the highlight though. You’ll hike along the same trails used by furnace workers and ore miners. You’ll see miles of trees and other gorgeous sights as you walk along these trails.
Deerlick Creek Campground
You don’t have to go camping to have a great time at Deerlick Creek Campground. Sure, the spot is mainly known for its camping facilities, but it offers so much more. Both campers and day use visitors can explore the campground. The paved bicycle trail and hiking trails are perfect for viewing the fall foliage. You’ll walk along the trees and get to look out at the water as well. This is fall hiking at its best, so make the trip to Deerlick Creek, Alabama. Keep in mind that the campground closes for the season on Nov. 29 though, so you don’t have a lot of time to wait.
